This got me thinking...if my book could have a musical score, what would it sound like? I know that some people make book trailers and I can only assume they use some type of music during the trailer, but I'm thinking more along the lines of an actual song/score that I would hear while reading my novel.
Of course my POS Chasing Manson is heavily influenced by 60/70s music so it's easy for me to think of several songs while I am re-reading and re-writing. However, I am talking about an OVERALL song/score. Now that I think about it, I am sure it would be "Riders on the S
torm" from the Doors. It might even be an instrumental version- but the lyrics/music of this song are haunting enough to the be the theme song of my novel.What about you? If you had to choose a song or score that embodies your novel(s), what would it be?

Wow, great question! I LOVE listening to scores on movies. Or even the music played in certain trailers. If a preview uses a song that I like, I'm paying more attention to the screen (see: 30 Days of Night, Clash of the Titans, etc.) I think for my manuscript, I would use "Color Blind" by The Counting Crows, or that James Morrison song about the pieces not fitting-you know the name of it.

This is so up my alley. In fact, for all the novels I've written (if not published), I've burnt my own CD soundtracks which I keep for inspiration. The music is varied and timely...and usually very personal. My latest published novel, Looking for Anita, is all ABBA, Bee Gees, and some other late 70s pop faves.

I'm not sure if it would work in a film version of my WiP, but while writing it I listened to TONS of Radiohead, Animal Collective and Grizzly Bear. The story takes place in kind of misty, woodsy areas, so I think atmospheric alternative rock fits the bill!
ReplyDeleteI love thinking about how music and writing fit together, because I am such a visual person. When listening or reading I am always picturing something in my mind, so they seem to work together well. (Now I will have Riders in the Storm stuck in my head - love it!)
Sarah - glad you are a Doors fan too- and a music/writer lover as well :) My cuz and I are huuuuuge music lovers and are constantly trying to find ways to mash the two of them together- speaking of "mash" new Glee tonight- YEAH!
ReplyDeleteI have a hard time imagining a score for my current wips. But years ago I wrote novels with dark themes to them, and I always heard in my mind the music of The Cure.
